Should I fix my old Mac? Or should I buy a new one? Is it worth repairing/upgrading? Is it better to buy a new one?

Obviously, buying a new laptop is desirable, but not everyone can afford to spend around £800-£1500.

Macguys  is always happy to find best solutions to ease your life and save you some money. We bring dead devices back to life!

Each of us one day comes to that point, when we have to make this decision. We are tired of our computer taking us a big cup of coffee to drink while it boots up, sometimes even take a shower or get kids from school. We try to utilise that time. Another fear is that, what if it turns off suddenly like it has already done few times. Or, what if one day it does not turn on? Will all my data be gone?

Another scenario is that it is relatively reliable, but extremely slow. You hate everything and everyone including yourself while trying to save something and export it and send to someone, or when you are brave enough to connect your iPhone for synchronisation.

Now, lets get to he point. Lets say you have a MacBook that you had from 2006 /2007 /2009. It is annoyingly slow.

What are the upgrade options? And how long are they to serve more?

#1. The first and easiest step is to upgrade the RAM. (Random access memory)

Definition: Alternatively referred to as main memory, primary memory, or system memory, Random Access Memory (RAM) is a hardware device that allows information to be stored and recovered on computer. Because information is accessed randomly instead of sequentially as it is on a CD or hard drive, the computer can access the data much faster.

If you flip your mac upside down and see what year it belongs to, or click on Apple icon on top left corner and then click on “About this Mac”  you can find out some specs.

Each slot usually can hold 2-8 GB of memory. If your MacBook is White/Black that you have purchased it in 2006-2008 and sharp cornered, you can upgrade the RAM to maximum 4 GB of RAM. Please do not expect to run Yosemite or El Capitan, or macOS Sierra. Snow Leopard it is!

If your MacBook is White and smoother in the corners, and you have purchased it in 2008-2010, or silver, that is called “The first Pro” than it can hold up to 8 GB of RAM Memory and you can easily run El Capitan.

Once you pop into our store, we can do that for you in an hour!

#2. Make some space.

Most of us think that if 20% of our space is free, we are good. However in order to have your old mac running quicker, you should preferably have almost half of its space free.

This means that, you should purchase an external hard drive and keep your precious memories such as old Photos and Videos there. However we can do something better for you!

#3. Have your additional hard drive inside your MacBook.

If you don’t like the idea of carrying an external hard drive with you all the time, fearing to lose it, there is a way to keep an additional Hard drive inside your MacBook. Also the problem with external hard drives is that, if you drop it, or for some reason it failed, all your data will be gone. You can try recovering it taking it to specialists, but some may be critically unrecoverable, or corrupted once recovered.

The needle that touches the disk may no longer be able to read the data, or moreover, the disk itself may end up not spinning coherently giving errors during attempts in recovery.

What can we do?

If you have a DVD Drive, that most probably you never use, you can install an additional hard drive just in there!

However this is a very delicate job to do, and only specialists can help you out to choose the right disk and the right bracket and install it for you.

You will not have to carry an external hard drive anymore, you can select and drop all your data back and forward and have direct access to the additional hard drive.

This tip is applicable on all types of MacBook’s with DVD Drives.

The procedure is, that you insert your old HDD in the bracket and as the main HDD you fit in a SATA Solid State, which is much faster than your old one. While your new SATA will be the main disk to boot from, you will always be able to use your old HDD as backup or separate storage integrated into your Laptop.

#4. Buy a faulty one and fix it.

Probably when it comes to cars, this tip is also useful, but more risky. With laptops it’s less expensive and less risky, if you know exactly what to do, if you don’t, we are always here to help and advise.

What can we do?

First, we already sell refurbished laptops with 90 days warranty! Yes, we give warranty for refurbished items as well!

If you do not find your desired item in our store, you can always ask for our assistance and advise. We will help to find the right one for you, check the specs and provide the upgrade options and the estimate.

#5. Last but probably, most important more advise rather than tip. You need to service your laptop at least one a year.

We have come across many customers who were shocked, surprised, and disgusted when we showed how their laptops looked inside. The amount of dust, dirt and “USO” (undefined sneaked objects) had big impact on laptop’s performance

You might think how can dust kill the Laptop

When the fan gets too much dust, it still spins, but can no longer cool down the components inside. When the air is no longer able to circulate inside the Laptop, the parts inside constantly heat and overheat. This can result in graphic problems, as well as Logic board failure. The connection between the parts not made promptly hence causes slow performance.
